Spain removes airport transit visa requirement for ordinary Indian passport holders

Indian nationals holding ordinary passports no longer need Spain’s airport transit visa when remaining in an airport’s international transit zone. The exemption took effect on 4 March 2026 and should not be confused with permission to enter Spain.

What is in force?

Spain has removed its airport transit visa requirement for Indian nationals holding ordinary Indian passports. The Spanish Embassy in New Delhi announced the decision on 19 February 2026, with an effective date of 4 March 2026.

The notice specifically covers transit through the international zones of airports in Spain. For travellers within that scope, the airport transit visa, described in the announcement as the TAP visa, is no longer required.

This is an implemented exemption, not a consultation or a future proposal. As of 21 October 2026, the commencement date stated in the embassy notice has passed.

The international transit zone is the key limit

The announcement should be read according to its stated scope. It removes an airport transit document requirement for a defined group of passport holders and a defined type of journey.

It does not announce visa-free entry into Spain for Indian tourists. Nor does it describe a general exemption from Schengen entry requirements or from requirements imposed by another country on the same itinerary.

Travellers should therefore distinguish remaining in an international transit zone from a connection that requires entering Spain. The supplied notice does not provide a checklist for deciding which category every airport transfer falls into.

Check the actual connection

Before booking, ask the airline whether the complete itinerary allows you to remain within the international transit zone. Where a journey involves separate bookings, baggage collection or a change in arrangements, ask specifically whether passing through passport control will be necessary.

These are practical checks, not additional conditions quoted from the embassy announcement. Their purpose is to establish whether your journey fits the exemption the embassy actually published.

What this means for you

For Indian tourists and students connecting through Spain on their way elsewhere, the change removes one visa requirement where the transit remains within the announced scope. It does not settle the documentation needed for the final destination.

Check the Spanish Embassy’s official notice, confirm your connection with the carrier and verify any entry permission separately. Do not interpret an agent’s description of a flight as ‘transit’ as sufficient proof that you can remain airside throughout.
